Music Video - Amplification

Michael Jackson is probably one of the most recognized artist for applying Goodwin's theory of amplification, and it all started with this video right here. Michael Jackson 's thriller is the held belief to be the cornerstone for all music videos today. The reason is because once the video was released it demonstrated to the world that music video can be considered as mini films. further the lyrics itself is not entirely related to the video i mean in regards to zombies dancing it has absolutely nothing to what he is saying but it is put there in order to add effectiveness.

Music Video - Illustration

I have chosen Asher Roth, "I Love College" to demonstrate a music video that sticks to Goodwin's theory of illustration this video sticks to that so well in regards Asher is seen throughout the video showing the target audience what he loves about college all the time in sync and relating it to the lyrics.

Boyz II Men- I'll Make Love to You

The video that I have decided to analyse is one of there greatest hits "I'll Make Love To You" done by one of the most successful Groups of the late 80s and 90s produced by Motown records, Boyz II Men.
The content of the song is very clear from the title where the story is about a young man who is in a sense willing to go and make love to the woman he loves. Therefore the video has very clear explicit meaning in that the man himself is not able to approach the woman and tell her face to face hence he writes what he feels. therefore the role of Boyz II Men in the video is to dictate the message the young guy is going to give to the woman.
The video at the same consists of implicit meaning due to the fact in behalf of the target audience the lyrics cannot fully be illustrated through the video. But the majority of the target audience would agree with the dominant response by recognising the environmental message.
The video still conforms to a typical music video however in regards to the artist being the main subject in the video. however through low key lighting the implicit meaning behind the video is to highlight that what they are singing about is seemed to be heavenly.
At the same time people can argue that the video is a form of disjucture in that it is telling a mini film. Where the target audience can relate to and understand I.E the location has a very explicit meaning in that the scene set is in almost like the woman is in preparation for making love.

Lady Gaga Bad Romance Analysis: Does Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" conform or subvert to the codes and conventions of a typical pop video?

Lady gaga is a very controversial person within the pop industry. Many people would say that she subverts to the typical view of a traditional video. I would have to agree with this majority because immediately from the outset you can see that the video is mainly Goodwin theory of amplification with a hint of disjucture because the lyrics only relate to the video at specific parts, whereas according to Goodwin the typical music video would be illustration where the video relates to the lyrics throughout and conforms to the codes and conventions.
The video we see here however gives an unbalanced representation of what she is singing about, almost like a psychotic promotion which really doesn't supply an idol for young teenagers to imitate. Lady gaga iconography actually gives a gothic feel whereas normal pop video gives a positive and happy feeling for people to relate to. However it clear to see in the video that her intertextuality is Madonna.
The video conforms though for lady gaga herself iconography is provocative clothing which almost seems necessary for all successful pop videos  done by woman. Her mis en scene also conforms take for example where we see the fire rising later on during the video, which signifies burning desires. Further there is evidence of codes and conventions being the close up of the artist and the direct address she gives to the audience.  There is also many camera codes which the video sticks to being, cross cutting, low key lighting and high key lighting. Lastly the artist always remains the centre of focus.
Overall the lady Gaga video of bad romance in my opinion remains to subvert the typical music video but however it does conform to the codes and conventions.

Music Video Research

I chose this music video to highlight the way Nas illustrated the video buy collecting different clips of oppression and poverty to depict the message he is trying to portray through the lyrics of the song. However it consists many aspects of amplification i.e that the video topic is derived from the lyrics, further does not consistently run in line with the lyrics, which i believe it is done well in order to keep the  demographics interested throughout the video and listen carefully to the lyrics.
